If you are worried about something in your store
If there is immediate danger, such as a fire, a large spill or someone unwell, call 999 and follow your own emergency procedure.
If you have found something that concerns you but nobody is in immediate danger, leave it where it is. That includes a bottle you suspect is dried picric acid, a bottle of old ether with crystals around the cap, or a container that has swollen or started to leak. Do not open it or move it to see what it is. Keep people away, lock the store if you can, and speak to your head of department or your health and safety adviser. Schools can also contact CLEAPSS or SSERC if they are members. Then call us in office hours.
We do not offer 24-hour cover and we do not promise response times, so please do not rely on us for an emergency. Emergency chemical removal sets out what can be arranged.
What we can talk about
Most conversations concern a stock list, a store clearance or a regular collection. We can also discuss chemical store assessments for legacy or unknown stock, and the annual stock check and collection plan.
Some items need a closer look before anyone can give a price. Controlled drugs, radioactive sources, explosives including dried picric acid, compressed gas cylinders, asbestos and unknown substances are all handled as a manual enquiry, so tell us about them up front.
For anything about the Chemical Register, including pricing, invoices and security questions, the same number and email address reach us.
If you run a registered hazardous waste carrier and would like to work with us, please use the same details and mention that you are a supplier.
Our role
Box 4 arranges collection through registered hazardous waste carriers and handles the quote, paperwork and invoice. We do not transport, hold or treat waste ourselves. How collection works explains who does what.
