Benzyl benzoate (CAS 120-51-4): storage and disposal
Benzyl benzoate is an oily liquid held in university stores and in pharmacies, both as the neat chemical and in topical preparations. It is harmful if swallowed and toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects. A bottle of the pure liquid and a bottle of finished lotion are not the same waste, and a diluted product may be less hazardous than the substance itself, so the label decides how each is described.

What to do this week
- Check the label is readable and write down the opened date if it is not already there.
- Check it is stored as general stock and apart from the items listed under "Do not store with".
- If you no longer need it, add it to your disposal list so it goes on the next collection.
Safe storage in a school or lab
The aquatic hazard is what separates it from ordinary general stock, because a spill that reaches water does lasting damage. Keep it in a dry, labelled, well organised store, in a tray that would catch a spill, and date it on arrival. In a pharmacy, separate the neat chemical used for compounding from finished topical bottles, and keep both away from the food and drink area. A cool store can make the oily liquid cloudy or partly set, which is normal and not a reason to open the bottle. Keep the cap tight and avoid decanting into unlabelled containers.
How to tell it has deteriorated
Look at the container and label first. The liquid is oily and viscous, so a leak shows up as a greasy film on the neck, the shelf or the tray and as a label that has gone translucent or stained. A bottle left in a cold room may look cloudy or have a solid layer, which usually reflects temperature, not decay. Check for a lower level than the record, a swollen or cracked container and a cap that has stuck. For finished products, check the printed expiry. An undated or unlabelled bottle is treated as unknown stock whatever it looks like.
How it must be disposed of
By specialist collection only. It never goes down the drain or into general waste. It is normally packed in a non-regulated or low hazard laboratory pack with compatible chemicals.
Before asking for a collection, note what is in each container: neat benzyl benzoate or a topical preparation, with the label strength if it is a product. Waste code 16 05 06* describes the neat chemical in a laboratory holder, and 18 01 06* is the description in a human healthcare setting such as a pharmacy, with 16 05 08* for a discarded organic chemical outside a pack. Because it is toxic to aquatic life, it never goes down a sink or drain, and nobody should try to dilute or wash out a bottle. The collector packs it in a lab pack.

Common quantities we collect
Usually held as: neat, topical preparation.
Part-used bottles and full containers are both fine. Tell us the size and how many, and an estimate is enough for a first price.

Questions
Is a benzyl benzoate lotion the same waste as the neat liquid?
Not necessarily. A finished lotion may be less hazardous than the pure substance, but we do not say it is safe. Declare each by its label and strength, and let the collector decide how it is grouped.
Why must benzyl benzoate never be washed away?
It is toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects, so a drain is never a route. Keep any leftover in its labelled container, in a tray, and send it for specialist collection.
Our bottle has gone cloudy in the cold store. Is it spoiled?
It may only be the oily liquid chilling, since it can cloud or partly set in a cool room. Leave it capped, check the glass for cracks and keep it upright. Declare its appearance on the record.
Which waste code does a pharmacy use?
A human healthcare setting may use 18 01 06*, while a university store uses 16 05 06*. Say what type of site you are, and whether the bottle is neat chemical or a preparation.
